Make Your Website iPhone Home Screen Ready In A Few Easy Steps

My iCon

My iCon

I have wondered how all these sites are able to make their little icons show up on the iPhone instead of a basic screen shot of the site. Well, turns out after a little research it is an extremely easy process!

I hope this helps you all out, and I expect to see you all making your icons so we don’t have those ugly screen shots on our iPhones!

Here it is in 4 easy steps!

Step 1: Open the image you want to use in photoshop or image editor
Step 2: Crop the image to 45×45 pixels.
Step 3: Save the image as a png file with the name: apple-touch-icon.png
Step 4: Save this png in your root directory of your site and you are done!

This is the finished product on my home screen!

Looking For Advice

I am tearing out our old picket fence in the front yard. It is mostly rotted wood, and just in really poor shape. I am looking for some advice from anyone out there who can tell me the best place to take something like this to be recycled, or re-used somehow. I would really like to not see it just end up in a landfill out there.

Thanks in advance for any ideas any of you have.

Are You Annoyed By Anonymous Callers?

Trying to figure out if that 800 number is one you should answer? I discovered this site tonight when I was trying to figure out who has been calling me every night for the last week now. They can get really annoying, especially since I am on both the state and national do not call list!

I found this very handy… Turns out that one of the numbers calling has been a political survey company… another has been Columbia House.

I would recommend bookmarking this site so you can see if you want to answer that call or not!

iPhone Upgrade Woes… Learn from My Problems!

Today, Apple release iPhone update version 1.1.1. It brings some great new features like the iTunes Store for the iPhone,

Other new features:
– Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
– Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
– Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
– Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
– Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
– Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
– Support for TV Out
– Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
– New Passcode lock time intervals
– Adjustable alert volume

However, in all the greatness, Apple overlooked one issue. When I installed the update to my iPhone, it told me that I needed to enter my passcode to unlock the phone… However, when I went to do this, my phone told me it had to be activated before I could do anything other than make emergency calls.

I was getting quite frustrated, and only more so when I had to wait for 45 minutes to get ahold of tech support. After that, I had to talk with the tech support for 30 minutes to get my problem resolved. Unfortunately, it meant having to do a complete restore of the iPhone, but how does one do that when iTunes won’t recognize the iPhone?

I had to disconnect the phone from the computer, then turn it off. Once it was off, I then had to hold the home button down for 10 seconds, and then connect the phone to my computer. Once I did that, the phone asked if I wanted to restore the phone. Once that was done, I then had to sync the phone, and go back in and reset all my settings on the phone.

One big thing, if you are reading this Apple… Please make a way to delete multiple e-mails at once, as well as a way to empty the trash can!

Web Hosting Advice From My Readers…

As I have posted recently, Howard and I are having issues with slow sites from our current hosting company bizland. Bizland is telling us that the slowdown is on our end, but Howard and I just aren’t believing it. Load times for both our admin page and our blogs are inconsistent throughout the day.

Well, at this point we have had enough… We are both looking to abandon ship and move to a new hosting company. Some of the things we have seen that might be causing us problems are the fact that they are not using the most current versions of php and mysql. All of our problems seem to be database driven, as when you visit any of our pages that do not rely on the mysql database, they are just fine.

Three of the front runners for us to look at are three that WordPress themselves are recommending. Bluehost, ANHosting and HostICan. Price wise and storagewise, they are all pretty comparable. So it comes down to which one people prefere. And that’s where you all come in. If you can please respond with who you are using, and their reputation, we would appreciate it.

Thanks for all your help!

Gotta Love Free Lunches!

I am sure most of you know about this, but it doesn’t hurt to remind people. Many of the chain restaurants have websites where you can register for updates. One of those perks for updates can sometimes include free food for your birthday!

Today I am having free lunch on Noodles & Co! Tomorrow’s lunch will be courtesy of Qdoba! And I have a free Blizzard coming to me from Dairy Queen! Yeah you have to put up with an occasional e-mail about new products, but, Hey, it’s free food! 🙂

I am going to have to sign up for more so that next year I have a whole week of free food!

Weekly Blog-O-Sphere Tid-Bits – Sept. 17, 2006

Well, I apologize for the lack of updates lately. It’s a busy month for me only to be followed by my busiest month of the year as I once again get prepared for the Haunted House in October! Which speaking of, I have made the big time again this year, only this time actually at my home park! Check out the Fright By Night then chose the third tab for Brutal Planet on the main page. It was rather funny last year finding myself on the Georgia Six Flags page, and even funnier, as Dan pointed out, the fact that they suddenly had Pine trees in Georgia.

Well, I want to start of with some tid-bits I found around the web that aren’t necessarily blogs, but of worth looking at.

Have you been annoyed by the barrage of Insurance and Credit Card offers? I know I have been! Did you know you can request they stop? I found out today how to do it. It’s very easy, follow this link and fill in the info, and it should be bye-bye credit card offers!

Next is a site dedicated to one of mine, and I am sure many of your favorite foods! It’s chocolate, and this site is all about preserving the cocoa beans natural goodness. There are some fun articles and games to check out.

Dan had a customer of his recommend this spice shop to us for all our spice needs. Savory Spice is located right down the block from Paris on the Platte. I highly recommend them, they have so many different types you won’t know what to do! They just e-mailed me to tell me they have opened their second location on Main Street in Littleton.

OK, on to the Blog-O-Sphere!

Howard has posted a fun article he wrote a few years back about the local art house theaters in Denver

Scott-O-Rama links us to a highly addictive site!

Here is Letterman’s tribute to Bill Gates retirement. Thanks to Life After Coffee for bringing this clip to my attention!

Rob’s Stuff brings us another funny video. A commercial for ice cream from down under.

And finally, for those of you that were fans of the Ellen Show, is hosting a contest to win a DVD set of season 4. All you have to do is submit a story of where you were when the coming out episode aired. For me, that was easy, Howard was throwing me a birthday/friend’s candle/Ellen coming out party, as she came out on my birthday!

UPDATE: Cash Just Lying Around Your House?

Do you have any old cell phones just lying around that don’t get any use? Can you use some extra cash? I know I can. I discovered this site while researching my Smell-O-Phone story (Funny how one story has spawned a lot of others).

They pay a decent amount for old phones that they then recycle. If you are in the market for a new iPod, they will also pay you to recycle old iPods that are in good working shape. Check it out, you may just have some cash lying around your house that you didn’t know about! I certainly did!

UPDATE: I am bringing this back just to let you all know that I have received my check, it was a painless process! Took 8 weeks to the day to send out the check. But I am $38 dollars richer and can have fun at the State Fair tomorrow now!
